The Gist:
Folsom Lake College will host the NASA International Space Apps Challenge Oct. 4–5. The free hackathon invites coders, scientists, artists, and innovators to tackle NASA-designed challenges using open data. Teams will brainstorm, build, and pitch projects over the weekend.

It’s a rare chance for locals to flex creativity, learn new skills, and connect with global problem-solvers, without leaving Folsom.

The Gist:
El Dorado Western Railroad just unveiled a new three-car excursion train featuring a 1952 locomotive, restored caboose, and converted Army flatcar. The volunteer-run operation offers rides the third Saturday of each month through December from El Dorado Station, with departures at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 1 p.m.

Why It Matters:
This gives locals another way to experience railroad history right in their backyard, with tickets just $12 for adults and $3 for kids.
