Town Center welcomes new businesses

The Gist: El Dorado Hills Town Center added two new businesses to its retail mix on Oct. 5th. Utah-based FiiZ Drinks opened its first Sacramento-area spot serving dirty sodas mixed with syrup, fruit, and cream. Meanwhile, local butcher shop Kings Meats expanded from Diamond Springs to launch its second regional location.

Why It Matters: These new storefronts bring custom specialty drinks and local meat cuts right into the neighborhood. Having both options in Town Center gives residents convenient choices without leaving the community.

Ruby’s Books expanding to larger Sutter location

The Gist: Ruby’s Books is moving across the street to 705 Sutter St., expanding into a two-story space over 6,000 square feet. Owner Stacy Gould purchased the former Fire and Rain Gallery building for $1.67 million and plans to add an upstairs level to double the store's size. The new building will feature an expanded children’s department, more inventory, and extra room for author events and book clubs.

Why It Matters: Since opening in 2020, Ruby’s Books has become a favorite gathering place for local readers and families. This expansion keeps a cherished independent merchant in Historic Folsom while creating a much larger hub.

Heavy granite and a quirky slice of history

312 3rd Street, Represa

October brings the perfect backdrop for a visit to the Folsom Prison Museum. Reopened this year in a former warden's home, the space covers 140 years of heavy local history, from hand-quarried granite to Johnny Cash memorabilia.

Volunteers who once worked the cell blocks share firsthand stories, and an astonishing eight-foot toothpick Ferris wheel steals the show.
