Labor Day weekend is almost here, which means one last round of summer plans before the calendar starts filling up with fall activities.

We love a good local surprise, and this week’s Jake Peavy story definitely qualifies. A former Cy Young winner and World Series champion playing a tiny show in Historic Folsom is about as unexpected as it gets. Meanwhile, Folsom is gearing up for its 80th birthday with dinner on Rainbow Bridge and 250 drones in the sky, while the rest of the weekend brings craft beer, Louisiana blues, country music, and much more. Not a bad way to kick off September, so consider this your nudge to make some plans!

Folsom marks 80 years with a dinner (and 250 drones!)

The Gist: Folsom turns 80 this year, and Choose Folsom is marking it in style. On Sunday, September 13, the Rainbow Bridge closes to traffic and becomes an open-air dining room for Dinner on the Bridge, a sunset multi-course meal from top regional chefs, including EDH's own Devin Dedier of Vacanza Romana. A 250-drone light show, sponsored by Dignity Health, closes out the night.
Why It Matters: It is a rare, only-in-Folsom spectacle, and the drone finale is built to be seen well beyond the bridge, so the whole community can share in the 80th (and the country's 250th). Rainbow Bridge is closed 8 a.m. to midnight Sept. 13; the Historic Truss Bridge stays open to walkers and cyclists.
Trading the mound for an Old Folsom stage
The Gist: Baseball fans know Jake Peavy as a 2007 Cy Young winner and two-time World Series champ. Recently he turned up in Historic Folsom for a very different kind of appearance, an intimate, one-night-only show at Gaslight Co. on Sutter Street, playing alongside his friends in the local band The Golden Cadillacs. The entire venue was reserved for just 80 guests.
Why It Matters: A big-league name playing a tiny hometown room is exactly the kind of surprise that makes the Sutter Street music scene special.
